The Olive Grove
From the November harvest to new oil in December, and you can be in the middle of it.
The olive grove is the oldest part of the farm and the one that makes the most work, which is another way of saying it is the one with the most to tell.
November and December: the harvest
For six weeks everything else stops. The nets go down, the trees are beaten, the crates fill, and everything goes to the mill before the day ends, because olives left overnight push the oil’s acidity up.
Anyone staying at that time is invited (never obliged) to help. It is not a performance: it is work, and your hands turn black. In exchange you eat lunch in the field and taste the new oil while it is still cloudy, on bread, with salt. There is not a great deal better.
The rest of the year
January to October the grove is shade and quiet. It is the best place on the farm in the middle of an August afternoon, and it is where the donkeys go walking.
