The Orchard
Figs, oranges, pomegranates, quinces and an almond tree that flowers in February.
The orchard sits between the two houses, which means you walk through it several times a day without noticing, until you do.
What there is, and when
February: the almond in blossom. It lasts a fortnight and is the loveliest thing that happens here in winter. April and May: loquats. July and August: figs, every day, more than anyone can eat. September: the first pomegranates. October: quinces, for marmelada (quince paste), which is what becomes of them. December to February: oranges and lemons. The oranges in your breakfast juice come from ten metres away.
The rule
There is no rule. If it is ripe, pick it and eat it. There are wicker baskets hanging by the kitchen door for exactly that.
The only thing we ask is that you do not shake the trees, bruised windfalls rot in two days, and then nobody gets them.
