The Chickens and the Donkeys
Eggs still warm before breakfast, and two donkeys who never refuse a carrot.
We keep chickens and we keep two donkeys. They are not an attraction, they live here, but they are, without question, the reason children get up early.
The chickens
They roam during the day, under the olive trees and wherever else they fancy, and take themselves in at dusk. In the morning you open the hen house and see what there is: some days eight eggs, some days two. Whatever you collect is breakfast.
We show you how to pick up an egg without breaking it and how to pick up a hen without getting pecked. Both are learned first time.
The donkeys
Azeitona and Bolota, in the paddock beside the threshing floor. Gentle, curious and entirely without shame when there are carrots in view. You can brush them, feed them and walk them on a lead down the olive grove track, they are not for riding, and they prefer it that way.
Late in the afternoon they come to the fence of their own accord and wait. It is not hunger: it is habit.
If you bring your own
Dogs are welcome and there is real space for them to run. We only ask that they stay on the lead near the chickens and the donkey paddock, for the chickens’ sake, and everyone’s peace.
