The Pond
Living water with herons, dragonflies and fish. For swimming, there is the pool.
The pond is the reason there are birds here. It is not large and it is not for swimming, it is still water ringed with reeds, and it is where the whole farm comes to drink.
Early morning
The alarm clock genuinely earns its keep. Between first light and eight there is low mist sitting on the water, and it is the only hour of the day the heron lets you get close. After that the sun climbs, the vapour lifts, and the pond goes back to being a pond.
Take coffee. Do not take conversation.
Fishing
There are fish. Bring your own rod and put back whatever you catch, that is the only condition and it is not negotiable, because the pond is small and its memory is short.
Where you actually swim
In the pool, on the other side of the threshing floor. Open May to October, with shade beside it from two in the afternoon, which in August counts as a feature.
