We are inland, and that is what makes the quiet. But the sea is fifty minutes away, and it is not just any sea: this is the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano, the most protected (and emptiest) coast in Portugal.
Where to go
Vila Nova de Milfontes, 50 min. Where the Mira meets the Atlantic. Sheltered beaches on one side, surf on the other, and the only town on this coast with any life in January.
Zambujeira do Mar, 55 min. Smaller, rougher, better at sunset.
Cabo Sardão, 65 min. The only place on earth where storks nest on sea stacks above the ocean. Go late in the day.
Praia do Malhão, 55 min. Long, windy and nearly always empty. There is a sand path down to it.
Before you go
The Atlantic here is cold all year: 16 to 19 degrees in summer. A wetsuit is not vanity.
There is morning fog in July and August that does not lift much before eleven. It is worth leaving later and staying for the sunset.
And take lunch with you: outside the towns there is nothing, and that is precisely why these beaches are still what they are.
